Pole Mounted Switchgear

Cooper Power Systems is the worlds largest manufacturer of Pole Mounted Auto Reclosers with a pedigree at their Kyle manufacturing plant in South Milwaukee going back over 50 years. One of the first manufacturers to use vacuum interrupting techniques, this has been at the heart of their reclosers for more than 20 years.
The latest axial magnetic vacuum interrupters were developed and patented at the Kyle plant. Coopers oil insulated, vacuum interrupting reclosers have served the industry safely and reliably and continue to be the preferred option in many parts of the world. The use of SF6 as either an interrupting or an insulating medium was rejected by Cooper due to the anticipated problems with by-products, loss of gas and eventual legislation against the gas due to its greenhouse classification.

With Coopers ‘in house’ vacuum and epoxy moulding capability the natural development was to the solid encapsulation of a vacuum bottle. This required great expertise when you consider the electrical and thermal stresses involved in a fault clearing device. The successful combination of this idea with magnetic actuation has led to the NOVA recloser which is ‘State of the Art’ in this field.

Whether your requirement is for simple protection, fully automated reconfiguration or remote control, Cooper has the necessary control package, experience and product reliability to give you peace of mind.

The Cooper Nova Recloser is mounted here on the Utilities standard transformer support hardware. Surge Arresters hang directly from the HV bushings. The unit shown has remote capability via its RTU which is powered by the little 500VA transformer. The Nova is the least maintenance intensive recloser available today with a minimum of moving parts and no oil or SF6 to check. This utility first installed Novas in 1997 and they have given trouble free service to date

The remote operation switch shown is popularly used at Normally Open Points. This Utility is using the structure of the existing rocking switch/isolator to fit three Cooper Power Systems VCS-1 single phase encapsulated vacuum switches. Each switch has a 12V DC actuator motor connected to the specially designed control/RTU. This in turn is powered by the 500VA transformer. The vacuum switches are electrically ganged and can be operated locally or remotely. One set of contacts per phase of the air break switch are retained for isolation purposes. This utility has installed 500 such switch banks since 1996.
